The city of Naples, Florida is moving forward with plans to redesign and rebuild their iconic pier, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ian last September. At a recent City Council meeting, a contract was awarded to Turrell Hall & Associates for design services in the amount of $1,478,400.
One of the primary reasons Turrell Hall won the contract was their promise to retain the pier’s historic essence, including its Polynesian roof lines and wood decking and railing. The new design will also include stronger concrete beams and pilings to protect the pier from future storms, as well as potentially adding raised gazebos, lower fishing decks, and designated viewing areas.
The community has been heavily involved in the pier’s design process through various surveys and feedback sessions. Most respondents stated that the pier’s unique design and historical value were the most important components of the rebuild. Other desired additions included underwater wildlife cameras, designated fishing areas, and live music. However, some were concerned about noise and traffic with regards to music events.
Naples officials are also working to determine how to best design the pier’s concession area to make it user-friendly and safe for visitors. The redesign process is expected to take up to six months, and more input will be sought from the community as the final plans are developed.
The Naples Pier has been a beloved part of the community for generations, and the city’s commitment to retaining its historic charm while upgrading its safety and amenities is a positive step towards welcoming visitors once again.
